Hints and Tips - Tandem Feeding

I have two very sleepy babies dosed up on Calpol! They had their 3 month immunisations this morning and are sleeping it off so I thought I’d take advantage and start to put together some hints and tips for twin parents. Obviously these are just things that I am slowly discovering along the way.

Feeding is always going to be a difficult issue with twins unless you are one of those lucky ones who have actually mastered the art of tandem breastfeeding. I gave it my best shot but was fighting a losing battle with Tilly and Jasper. I managed the best part of 3 weeks before giving in to bottles and feeling devastatingly upset. 13 weeks down the line and feeding is understandably the most time consuming activity. Unless you’ve got a willing helper available for every feed you will inevitably end up with one screaming baby each time, which can also upset the one that you are trying to feed. A couple a weeks ago I got back from town a little late for their feed and I thought it was going to be a very awkward and noisy one. I decided to plonk them in their bouncy chairs and sit on the floor between them with a bottle in each hand. Result. Two very smily happy babies and a quick and easy feed! Unfortunately since then I have fallen down stairs (thankfully without a baby) and done my back in – making sitting on the floor extremely painful :(

Tilly: Yeah? You think you can take me on? Wanna try?

  1. Hi Rebamc - I'm a new twin mum too and am with you on the difficulties of feeding. It's great to hear from someone facing the same challenges (and getting the same rewards). I've added you to my blogroll...
